Newport’s Hidden History

A clear eyed view of our Fair City.

This week the 74 a non profit news website focused on education in the United States published an article that takes a look at the uncomfortable history of slave commerce in Rhode Island and particular role Newport played in this horrible chapter in our Nation’s History.

It also sheds light on our State’s Education Department efforts to bring this chapter into a permanent part of our children’s curriculum.  And in particular the handling of these topics by local educators.

We’re proud to see the good work of our Neighbors and friends in bringing this conversation into a modern understanding and to keep this conversation alive so that future generations can learn from past tragedies.

Deep appreciation for Gabrielle Brown,  Victoria Johnson, Niko Merritt and all involved with the Middle Passage Project here in Newport.
