The next Newport City Council meeting will be on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 6:30 pm in the Council Chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall.
Members from Involve Newport’s GUTS initiative will be present and available at the workshop and Council meeting to help attendees navigate, stay informed, and engage with City Council happenings before, during, and after each meeting.

Any individual wanting to address the Council on a subject that is not on the agenda can sign in to speak for 3 minutes in the Citizens Forum with the City Clerk prior to the start of the meeting.
This week’s City Council meeting is slated to address a number of important issues ranging from changes to the budget, financial report submittal, recognition of Pride month, parking, and the municipal flag display resolution; among other topics.
Here are some items we felt worthy of highlighting:
Public Hearing:
Budget Change Sheet for FY2024 and FY 2025 and the primary changes appear to be the addition of the Affirmative Action Officer and the change in title for the Canvassing Clerk to the Election Administrator with an increase in pay effective July 1, 2023.
First Reading of a Personnel Ordinance and the Ordinance Appropriating Revenue however, details of the ordinances are not contained on the Agenda.
Receipt of the Popular Annual Financial Report July 1, 2021 thru June 30, 2022. The Report can be obtained at the following link and details the City’s General Fund, the School’s Unrestricted Fund, the Capital Project Fund, the Water Fund, and the Water Pollution Control Fund.
Resolutions – To Be Voted Upon by Council:
The recognition of June as Pride Month and the raising of the Progress Pride Flag outside of City Hall for the month of June.
The welcoming of the Ocean Race to Newport and recognition of the rights of Nature.
Ordinances – To Be Voted Upon by Council:
Parking Restrictions on Specific Streets – Amending 10.24.010 to add Yznaga Avenue to No person shall park a vehicle at any time upon any of the following streets.
Communications from the City Manager – For Receipt / Discussion:
Contract-RIMPA—Engineering Services for Perroti Park Dock Replacement and the recommendation from the City Manager for Council to approve a resolution to approve the contract with FR Engineering Group for $28,500 for these services.
Municipal Flag Display Policy recommendation from the City Manager for Council to approve a resolution on a policy of the City of Newport to fly flags of the City of Newport, State of Rhode Island, the United States of America, and recognized governments as well as other flags from time to time following a vote by the City Council.
